The Prodrive P25 Restomod: A Rally Icon Reimagined for the Modern Age
Enter the Prodrive P25 restomod. This is more than just a custom build; it’s a meticulously crafted, limited-edition tribute to a rally icon: the Subaru Impreza 22B STI. Prodrive, renowned for its motorsport heritage, has masterfully blended classic aesthetics with cutting-edge technology.
What makes the Prodrive P25 truly special? Its exclusivity. Unlike many one-off restomods, the P25 boasts a uniquely numbered chassis, signifying its place in a highly limited production run. Only 25 of these automotive masterpieces will ever exist, cementing its status as a highly sought-after collector’s item. Each one a testament to Prodrive’s engineering prowess and commitment to preserving automotive history.
I remember when Renncurator, the fortunate owner of the P25 featured here, reached out. He wanted to showcase his car at the prestigious Magarigawa Club in Japan. The opportunity to experience this modern marvel firsthand was simply irresistible. The prospect of witnessing this iconic car pushed to its limits on a world-class track was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
Renncurator’s trip wasn’t solely about the P25. He also brought along some of his other prized vehicles for some exhilarating track time. But that’s a story for another time. Today, we’re focused on the P25 and its transformation from a street-legal machine to a track-ready beast.
Trackside Transformation: Fine-Tuning for Peak Performance
Upon arriving at The Magarigawa Club, I witnessed the P25 undergoing a crucial transformation. The dedicated team was meticulously transitioning the car from its comfortable street setup to a more aggressive, track-focused configuration. Every adjustment was made with precision, ensuring optimal performance and safety on the demanding circuit.
The ride height was carefully lowered by 5mm on all four corners, accompanied by precise adjustments to the suspension arms. An additional 0.5 degrees of negative camber was added to both the front and rear wheels, optimizing grip and cornering performance. These subtle changes can have a dramatic impact on the car’s handling characteristics, especially at high speeds.
The suspension damping was stiffened to minimize body roll, and the street-legal brake pads were swapped for high-performance racing compounds, offering a glimpse into the P25’s potential. This meticulous process highlighted the car’s adaptability and the dedication to extracting maximum performance. It’s a testament to Prodrive’s engineering philosophy: attention to detail is paramount.
Up front, massive AP Racing 380mm vented discs, paired with powerful 6-piston calipers, provide exceptional stopping power. At the rear, 4-piston calipers clamp down on 350mm vented discs, ensuring balanced and controlled braking performance. These brakes are more than just components; they are crucial for maintaining control and confidence on the track.
First Impressions: Unleashing the Beast on the Track
After a day of meticulous tuning and preparation, it was finally time for the P25 to unleash its potential on the track. Prior to this, Renncurator had only experienced the car on the roads of Hong Kong, making this a true test of its capabilities. The anticipation was palpable as the P25 prepared to make its mark on the Magarigawa Club circuit.
But before we delve into its track performance, let’s explore what truly sets this restomod apart. Let’s start with the foundation: the chassis.
Carbon Fiber Alchemy: A Lightweight Revolution in Engineering
The P25 begins its life as a standard Subaru Impreza WRX STI. From there, it undergoes a radical transformation, shedding weight and gaining rigidity. This process is crucial for improving the car’s handling, acceleration, and overall performance.
The original bonnet, boot, front and rear quarter panels, roof, and bumpers are replaced with meticulously crafted carbon fiber reproductions. The track width is also significantly increased, giving the P25 its signature wide-body stance, reminiscent of the iconic 22B. The wide body isn’t just for show; it allows for wider tires and improved aerodynamics.
However, the transformation goes far beyond aesthetics. After acquiring the WRX chassis, it’s media-blasted down to bare metal. The chassis is then extensively reinforced and stiffened before the lightweight carbon fiber panels are carefully fitted, ensuring exceptional structural integrity. This meticulous process ensures that the P25 is not only lightweight but also incredibly strong and rigid.
Power and Poise: The Perfect Balance of Performance and Handling
Thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber, the P25 tips the scales at a mere 1200kg (approximately 2645 lbs). This lightweight construction creates a near-perfect balance with its potent 450BHP engine. The power-to-weight ratio is truly exceptional, making the P25 a formidable machine on the track.
Based on the legendary EJ25, the Prodrive-built motor is a masterpiece of engineering. Each engine is meticulously hand-assembled and personally stamped by Tony Hewtin, Colin McRae’s former engineer, adding a touch of racing pedigree. This personal touch adds a layer of authenticity and history to each P25 engine.
The engine features forged pistons, high-strength steel connecting rods, and expertly ported cylinder heads. A Garrett turbocharger, a large front-mounted intercooler, a lightweight carbon fiber intake, and a screaming Akrapovic titanium exhaust system complete the performance package. These components work in harmony to deliver impressive power and responsiveness.
Performance Unleashed: Numbers That Speak Volumes on the Track
While some might argue that 450BHP isn’t groundbreaking in an era of 1000hp hypercars, the P25 isn’t about chasing peak power. It’s about achieving the perfect balance between power, weight, and handling. It’s about creating a car that is engaging, rewarding, and incredibly fun to drive.
The engine’s impressive 443lb-ft of torque catapults the P25 from 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in a blistering 3.8 seconds. That’s acceleration that rivals many modern supercars. This rapid acceleration is a testament to the engine’s responsiveness and the car’s lightweight construction.
This rapid acceleration isn’t achieved with a conventional 6-speed gearbox. Instead, the P25 utilizes an X-Shift 6-speed sequential gearbox with close-ratio helical gears, providing lightning-fast shifts. It’s paired with an active and electrically adjustable center differential, allowing the driver to fine-tune the car’s handling characteristics. The sequential gearbox provides a direct and engaging driving experience, while the active center differential allows the driver to tailor the car’s handling to their preferences.
A Driver’s Car in the Purest Form: An Unfiltered Experience
The P25 embraces a ‘no frills’ philosophy when it comes to driver aids. It eschews modern electronic interventions, offering a raw and unfiltered driving experience. This means no ABS, no traction control, a traditional hydraulic handbrake, and a symphony of mechanical noises that connect the driver directly to the machine. This approach allows the driver to truly connect with the car and experience the thrill of driving in its purest form.
It’s all about fostering a visceral and engaging connection between the driver and the car, rewarding skill and precision. The P25 demands the driver’s full attention, rewarding those who can master its nuances with an unforgettable driving experience.
Modern Comforts, Classic Appeal: A Harmonious Blend
Stepping inside the P25, you’ll find that comfort hasn’t been sacrificed in the pursuit of performance. The interior is lavishly trimmed in Alcantara, covering everything from the floor to the roof, complemented by subtle carbon fiber accents. The Alcantara provides a luxurious and tactile feel, while the carbon fiber accents add a touch of modernity.
The P25 still boasts a full infotainment system, air conditioning, heating, push-to-start ignition, and a premium sound system, providing all the essential comforts of a modern daily driver. This ensures that the P25 is not only a capable track car but also a comfortable and enjoyable road car.
Renncurator’s car is particularly unique, as he believes it’s the only one of the 2
